Ask QuotationOn this day you can discover the beautiful countryside of the Campania Region, anchored by its capital, Naples. The region’s name originates from Campania Felix, a Latin phrase roughly meaning "happy land".
Dating back to the 12th Century BC, the area has strong historical ties to wine and the vine. The considerable influence of ancient empires, such as Greek, Roman and Byzantine, means historical legends are attached to some particular wines. The area is also well known for its production of Falerno (Faler- num), one of the most ancient wines in Italy.
Campania, like many other Italian regions, is home to an impressive array of grape varieties. Its most important variety is most likely Aglianico, the grape behind the region's two most famous and respected red wines: Taurasi and Aglianico del Taburno. Aglianico was introduced to the area by the Greeks and later cultivated by the Romans. Also vital to Campania's vineyards are the white-wine varieties of Fiano and Greco, which are championed by the region's most respected white wines, Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo. Fiano has been made and enjoyed in this area and beyond for more than 2000 years. Its original name was Vitis apiana ("vine of the bees" in Latin). Greco's name is a little more obvious, and indicates its Greek origins. Another light-skinned grape of interest of the area is Falanghina, which forms the backbone of Falerno del Massico and Galluccio wines. The honeyed sweetness of Falanghina wines gained much praise from the ancient writer and philosopher Pliny the Elder, who created the famous phrase "in vino veritas" (there is truth in wine).
